MDC Alliance UK & Ireland Province demands release of MP & 2 Youth Assembly leaders

The MDC Alliance UK and Ireland Province condemn in the strongest terms the arrest of 3 MDC Alliance female leaders after leading a flash demonstration on 13 May in Warren Park suburb, Harare against escalating hardships such as hunger since the commencement of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Joanna Mamombe, Secretary for Policy and Harare West MP, Cecilia Chimbiri Youth Assembly Vice Chairperson and Netsai Marova, Youth Deputy Organising Secretary were arrested at a Roadblock near National Sports Stadium on Wednesday, 13 Ma.

It is our belief that these 3 MDC Alliance female leaders are being held at Harare Central Police station.  We are not aware of any charges that have been laid and there is no clarity as to what this might look like.

The MDC Alliance party, their families and friends are very concerned and worried about their safety.

The 3 MDC Alliance female leaders must be released forthwith, these continued arrests and detention of opposition activists is unwarranted and totally unacceptable.
